The First Nowell (Traditional), arranged by Zoë Booth for four or more flutes/flute choir

The First Nowell is a traditional English Christmas Carol, dating from the sixteenth century, or possibly even earlier, and the spelling of Nowell is believed to be Anglo-Saxon. The carols’ exact time of origin is unknown; it must have been passed on from generation to generation for several centuries before it was first published, in 1833. Since then it has been sung and enjoyed by many festive carollers and seasonal well-wishers, and is as popular today!

This arrangement retains a traditional feel, using conventional harmony for a truly homogenous choir sound, suitable for Christmas concerts, carolling, and traditional services. As the piece progresses the verses and choruses become more elaborately varied, with the main lines being shared amongst all the flute parts.
