Summertime by Gershwin, arranged by Zoë Booth for five or more flutes/flute choir

£ 8.40

The list of George Gershwin’s songs which have remained in the repertoire to this day is long; his works have been often admired and recorded by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. Although remembered principally for his prolific output as a writer of songs and musicals, Gershwin had also studied classical music and was interested in the music of Debussy and, especially, Ravel.

‘Summertime’ is probably one of ‘Gershwin’s most widely-known songs; it is predominantly in the style of an African-American spiritual, although influences of Gershwin’s European connections are also evident. This arrangement retains the rich, repetitive, slow-moving chords of the original, and the famous vocal melody is shared between all players, although simpler parts remain at the bottom of the score.
